Christening Gowns and Baptism Gowns
Beautiful embroidered christening gowns are an important heirloom. A christening gown is said to represent the thread of a family’s history. The history of christening gowns and baptism gowns is an interesting one. Before the 17th century, babies were swaddled in tight clothes and brought to the front of the church in a bearing cloth which was a large piece of silk that was lavishly trimmed. Around the 18th century this tradition started to give way to front opening robe that was fastened with ribbon ties. A petticoat underneath showed through. At this time, the christening robes were made in the fashion of the clothes worn by 18th century children – boys and girls wore slip dresses with a long, flowing skirt that was held from a shorter bodice. It had a low neckline and short sleeves. This style has remained the style for christening gowns ever since. Silk christening gowns remain the most sought after for heirloom pieces.
