More Information

Daniel Swarovski was born in 1862 in Wattens, Tyrol. He invented and patented an electric machine used to produce lead crystal glass jewelry. Along with financers Armand Kosman and Franz Weis, he founded the Swarovski crystal company initially known as A. Kosmann, Daniel Swarovski & Co. The name was later changed to K.S. & Co. They built a plant in Wattens and the area used hydroelectricity for the various grinding processes required and this saved the company a great deal of money. Swarovski patented this technology to keep away the threat of competitors using it, and gained a huge advantage over most of the crystal production houses.

Originally, the company used an Edelweiss logo on its Swarovski crystal products, but changed the logo to today's swan logo in the late 1980's. In 1956, the Aurora Borealis crystal effect, inspired by special effects observed at the North Pole, was created in collaboration with Christian Dior. In 1976, the company created a silver mouse as an emblem for the winter Olympics. This is considered to be a landmark event in the increasing popularity of Swarovski Crystal among collectors.

In 2004, the Swarovski Crystal Company sponsored the movie "The Phantom of the Opera". A magnificent chandelier made out of Swarovski crystals was featured. In the same year, they created a nine foot tall crystal star which was placed upon the top of a Christmas tree in New York City.

The Swarovski Crystal Company is one of the top producers of lead crystals and sells crystal products all over the world. When shopping for Swarovski crystal products, look for the "Crystallized by Swarovski" tag or logo, a sure sign that you are buying items fashioned with maximum brilliance.
