Let Them Eat Cake!

During almost every wedding reception, the couple will traditionally feed each other wedding cake. It is a sweet gesture, but what is the real meaning behind it?

Wedding cake had it's beginning during the Roman Empire. The initial tradition was such that the groom would eat a piece of bread and then the rest was broken over the brideís head. This symbolized the ending of the brideís childhood and the beginning of her life as a wife, as well as the groomís dominion over the bride. Bread was later replaced by pie and then cake, which is where we get the tradition today.

The tradition of the bride and groom feeding each other wedding cake has evolved from one generation to the next, as well as from region to region. Initially, the wedding cake would be thrown at the couple as a way to wish fertility. In Europe, a tower of sticky buns would be stacked on top of each other. The bride and groom would have to stand on either side and try to kiss without causing the tower to fall. This represented prosperity for the future. The modern tradition of the bride and groom feeding each other a piece of wedding cake is to show the support that they will need to have throughout their marriage. From time to time youíll find the bride and groom smashing the cake into each otherís faces, but this is just to be playful.

There are many great wedding accessories to consider for the cake cutting. You may want to find a beautiful wedding cake serving set. Cake knife and serving sets are a perfect keepsake for the two of you to use throughout your party hosting years. These can range from rhinestone accented and brushed silver, to embellishments such as crystal handles. Generally during the cake cutting, ceremony toasts are given by the Maid of Honor and the Best Man. This would be a great opportunity to use wedding toasting flutes to match the cake server and knife.

On your first anniversary, remember to bring out your serving set and flutes for when you toast to your first year together, and dig into the top tier of your wedding cake, which is traditionally saved for that very moment.
