Wedding Roles for Family and Friends

Once youíve selected your honor attendants, bridesmaids, groomsmen, flower girls and ring bearers, what do you with the rest of your close friends and family? You want to honor them, but an enormous bridal party can be unwieldy and expensive. There are several special roles that family and friends can play in your wedding that will be helpful to you and a privilege to them.

Itís always a good idea to assign at least two Ushers or Usherettes, preferably one familiar with each side of the family, at the wedding ceremony. They can assist with seating and identify those family members who have been assigned special places at the wedding ceremony. They may work with the groomsmen to seat guests or take full responsibility for that task.

Greeters are also helpful at many weddings, especially those that require extra direction to orient guests as they arrive. A Guest Book Attendant will make sure that all guests have an opportunity to record their presence at your wedding. Program Attendants work with the Ushers or Greeters to distribute wedding programs and answer questions.

Depending on your denomination, there are many jobs that are required during religious ceremonies. If you plan to have candles on your altar, you might assign a candle lighter to start your procession. Some ceremonies include Bible, Crown, Glass, Gift or Cross Bearers. In Jewish ceremonies, close friends often carry the poles of the chuppah. Many, including civil ceremonies, allow for readers who might recite scripture, poetry or song lyrics that are meaningful to the couple.

At receptions, you can assign a friend to attend your candy buffet or take Polaroid photos for an alternative guest book.
