In the Spring each year, Catholic children around the world receive their First Communion. It is a very important rite of passage within the Church, and one that is steeped with great tradition reaching back to the early days of Christianity.
In the early days of the church, newly converted Christians were brought into the community and to learn the teaching of the church for often a year, and then they would participate in an initiation process. Children raised in the church receive these same sacraments of initiation thoughout their young lives.
Baptism was moved from adulthood to infancy because the church felt children would benefit from the graces received though this ceremony. Communion or Eucharist was switched to the age when the child could be expected to understand, known as the age of consent. The process of initiation is completed with Confirmation, celebrated at varying ages set by the bishops of each diocese.
The day of First Communion is quite a day of celebration, and the Irish and Italians not only view it as a religious event, but also as a cultural event. For the Irish family the selection of the Communion clothing often reflects the Irish heritage. It is not required but many Irish families do select symbolic clothing. Items include the Celtic cross, which symbolically is the unending love of God, with its familiar unending circle around the cross. The Claddaugh has become a very recognizable symbol and represents love and friendship. It is thought to originate from an old Irish Fishing village of Claddaugh.
The shamrock may be one of the most relevant symbols to tie heritage and religion together. The shamrock has the three leaves and is reminiscent of the Trinity, the most basic core principle of Catholicism after the Resurrection itself. Irish lace is also often used for First Communion Bible covers or hankies for girls. This is a way to honor both the tradition of the church and the Irish heritage.
First communion clothing is often given the same amount of thought and effort one gives to wedding clothing. It includes First Communion veils, and ornate white First Communion dresses that are often formal styles with lace and crinoline. Usually the dress is made from white satin, and the girls wear gloves and veils. First Communion rosary gifts are popular, as well as the First Communion missal. Parents select the clothing for their child to convey modesty and purity as they are presenting their child to the church and to the Lord for their First Communion ceremony.
